“…Organotin compounds have further been reported to inhibit aromatase activity in fish (Sanderson and van den Berg, 2003). Similarly, aromatase activity was decreased in Mytillus galloprovincialis (Morcillo et al, 1998), Baccinum undatum (Morcillo et al, 1999), and Rudipates decussates (Santos et al, 2002) exposed to TBT or inhabiting organotin-polluted sites. However, in many cases, the aromatase activity in non-exposed mussels remained at an extremely low level.…”

“…Indeed, TBT has been shown to be an in vitro inhibitor of cytochrome P450 aromatase activity in humans (Cooke 2002;Heidrich et al 2001) and periwinkles (L. littorea, Ronis and Mason 1996). Furthermore, in a comparison of common whelk (Buccinum undatum) females collected from areas of low and high shipping density in the North Sea, cytochrome P450 aromatase activity was significantly higher in normal females from the low shipping density area than in imposex-affected individuals from the high shipping density area (Santos et al 2002). Bettin et al (1996) pursued the possibility that TBT inhibits aromatase by exposing dogwhelks (N. lapillus and H. reticulata) to the steroidal and nonsteroidal aromatase inhibitors, SH 489 and flavone, respectively.…”

“…ELISA and GC/MS results were comparable and demonstrated significantly higher T concentrations in imposex-affected females than in snails from uncontaminated sites. Santos et al (2002) sampled normal and imposexaffected female Buccinum undatum from the open North Sea at three locations, one with low, and two with high-shipping densities. While levels of cytochrome P450, cytochrome b(5) and NADPH cytochrome c reductase activity did not show differences among groups, CYP19 activity was significantly higher in normal females collected in the low-shipping density area than in imposex-affected animals from highshipping density areas.…”
