Cystic schwannoma of the axillary region: imaging findings of a rare disease. Case report.

Abstract: Schwannomas are well capsulated, benign, and slowly growing tumors which originate from Schwann cells of peripheral nerve sheath. The incidence of schwannomas in the axillary region is not common. This rarity causes misdiagnosis at the radiological evaluation. In this case we present the imaging and histopathological findings of a cystic schwannoma located in the axillary fossa of a 47-year-old female patient mimicking complex cyst, lymphadenopathy or hydatid cyst in radiological evaluation. Although lymphaden… Show more

“…From the sonographic perspective, the latter signs plus the previously mentioned sonographic features of apocrine nodular hidradenoma can support the differential diagnosis with common cystic cutaneous lesions that show hypoechoic keratinous content such as epidermal cysts. On the other hand, schwannomas with cystic degeneration can appear as solid‐cystic tumors with hypoechoic areas and septa . However, most of these tend to be located deeper in the hypodermis, rarely involve the dermis, and are usually closer to vascular or neural bundles and tendons.…”

“…The main reason he was misdiagnosed by ultrasound was that the schwannoma had undergone an extremely rare change—with cystic change. Schwannoma may have degenerative changes, such as hemorrhage, calcification, and fibrosis, but cystic changes are extremely rare ( 21 , 22 ).…”
