Cystic pancreatic lesions: MR imaging findings and management

Abstract: Cystic pancreatic lesions (CPLs) are frequently casual findings in radiological examinations performed for other reasons in patients with unrelated symptoms. As they require different management according to their histological nature, differential diagnosis is essential. Radiologist plays a key role in the diagnosis and management of these lesions as imaging is able to correctly characterize most of them and thus address to a correct management. The first step for a correct characterization is to look for a co… Show more

“…MRCP is part of a standard protocol of MRI of the pancreas thanks to its fast and accurate visualization of the pancreatic duct and its alteration. MRCP is an important imaging tool to identify alterations of the pancreatic duct, from benign (e.g., chronic pancreatitis) (Figure 15) to border line (IPMN) (Figure 18) to malignant, which can show the presence of a pancreatic carcinoma even before it is visible on other sequences (Figure 21), and it is useful in the evaluation of cystic tumors of the pancreas [44]. A-D).…”

“…Cystic pancreatic lesions are heterogeneous groups of pathologies with different behavior and prognosis. It is quite difficult to differentiate these lesions because of the shared clinical manifestation and the overlapping imaging features of these lesions [2]. Cystic pancreatic lesions can be broadly classified as benign or malignant lesions.…”
