Cystathionine Beta Synthase Expression in Mouse Retina

Abstract: Purpose Cystathionine β-synthase (CBS), a key enzyme in the transsulfuration metabolic pathway, converts homocysteine to cystathionine, which is converted to cysteine required for synthesis of the major retinal antioxidant glutathione (GSH). Enzyme activity assays suggest that CBS is present in human and pig retina, however recent studies reported that CBS is not expressed in mouse retina. We found this species difference puzzling. Given the plethora of studies using mouse retina as a model system, coupled wit… Show more

“…This low and medium level of awareness could be due to remoteness, lack of health facilities, poor extension services, low training status on rearing and handling of animals, and low literacy rate which have been reported as major contributors to the low level of awareness among dairy farmers [23]. Now-a-days, improvement in the zoonotic diseases research should also be based newer basic science techniques and areas of genetic algorithms and ant colony optimization to combinatorial optimization problems [24][25][26].…”

“…Since CBS synthesizes H 2 S, we measured intracellular H 2 S level using a membrane-permeable probe, WSP1, that can emit green fluorescence upon its reaction with H 2 S (Liu et al, 2011;Markand et al, 2013;Peng et al, 2014). We found that treatment with IL-1b leads to an increase in green fluorescent intensity of WSP1 greater than 2.5-fold ( Figures 2G and S2F).…”

“…MPST is the least studied H 2 S‐producing enzyme and has been mostly associated with the CNS – with activity in the brain and retina – and the vascular endothelium, at least in rodents (Shibuya et al ., 2009a,b; Markand et al ., ). Intramitochondrial MPST has been shown to produce H 2 S, where it is able to maintain energy production by donating electrons to the electron transport chain, facilitating ATP generation (Goubern et al ., ; Módis et al ., ).…”
