We evaluated habitat changes of tributary (drowned river mouth) wetlands in the upper St. Lawrence River with analysis of pre-and postregulation water levels and historical vegetation reconstruction from aerial photographs. In addition, the germination response of transplanted wetland soil was compared to understand responses to moist versus saturated hydrology. Typha stem density was sampled in reference sites under the influence of water-level regulation by the International Joint Commission (IJC) and compared to treatment sites where installed control structures held levels (\0.7 m) higher. Major hydrologic changes due to regulation included a reduction of inter-annual variability with a reduction in peak levels and periodic lows, leading to a dampening of 30-40 year waterlevel cycles. Wetland photo interpretation indicated that flooded and mixed habitat categories were apparent at all sites for pre-regulation in 1948, but post-regulation photos (1972 and 1994) showed encroachment of robust emergent (Typha angustifolia, T. latifolia, and T. x glauca) in these habitats. Vegetation surveys (7 years, 2001-2007) indicated that reference and treatment sites were dominated by Typha, but mean stem densities were not statistically different. Typha stem density, however, declined in response to decreased summer water level. Periodic summer low water levels coupled with higher winter levels (that promote muskrat activity) were hypothesized to have the greatest effect on reducing Typha density. Seed-bank analysis indicated that a greater diversity of plant species germinated in mesic (moist) conditions than in the saturated treatment (flooded), where Typha was the dominant seedling component. Altered hydrologic regimes and invasive Typha have had a substantial effect on habitat structure within coastal wetlands and inferences from local management of levels provide useful guidance for future system-wide regulation.

Abstract. Lakes provide many important benefits to society including drinking water, flood attenuation, nutrition, and recreation. Anthropogenic environmental changes may affect these benefits by altering lake water levels. However, background climate oscillations such as the El Nino Southern Oscillation, and the North Atlantic Oscillation can obscure long-term trends in water levels, creating uncertainty over the strength and ubiquity of anthropogenic effects on lakes. Here we account for the effects of background climate variation and test for long-term (1992–2019) trends in water levels in 117 globally-distributed large lakes using satellite altimetry data. On average, 27 % of water level variation in individual lakes was associated with background climate variation. The relative influence of specific axes of background climate variation on water levels varied substantially across and within regions. After removing the effects of background climate variation on water levels, long-term water level trend estimates were lower (+1.0 cm year−1) than calculated from raw water level data (+1.4 cm year−1). However, the trends became more statistically significant in 76 % of lakes after removing the effects of background climate variation (the median p-value of trends changed from 0.12 to 0.02). Thus, robust tests for long-term trends in lake water levels which may or may not be anthropogenic will require prior isolation and removal of the effects of background climate variation. Our findings suggest that background climate variation often masks long-term trends in environmental variables, but can be accounted for through more comprehensive statistical analyses.

Field measurements made between 1992 and 1998 at Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré (SAB), a locality near Québec City, revealed that the high marsh microcliff is retreating at a mean annual rate of about 100 cm for the area between the wharf and the mouth of Rivière Sainte-Anne, a distance of approximately 3.5 km. The mean rate of lateral erosion is roughly similar from year to year although there are variations for the three areas surveyed. During the ice-free period (May to the end of October), the rate is slightly greater than that measured for the cold season (November to the end of April). Frost and shore ice are relatively important agents for the erosion of the high marsh. However, the main agents are waves and tidal currents whose activity extends daily over a period of 8 to 10 hours. The low coherence and compaction of the silty and sandy sediment forming the substrate of the high marsh, particularly when saturated, and also the occurrence of sedimentary deformations, are other factors contributing to the relatively high rate of lateral erosion of the high- tide marsh at SAB.Les mesures effectuées de 1992 à 1998 à Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré (SAB), près de Québec, indiquent que la micro-falaise du schorre supérieur recule à un rythme annuel d'environ 100 cm pour l'ensemble du secteur situé entre le quai et l'embouchure de la rivière Sainte-Anne, soit sur une distance d'environ 3,5 km. Le taux de recul est relativement constant d'année en année pour l'ensemble du secteur, mais on observe des variations selon les sous-secteurs. Durant la saison estivale (mai à fin octobre), le taux de recul est légèrement supérieur à celui de la période allant de novembre à la fin avril, ce qui comprend la saison hivernale durant laquelle la micro-falaise est habituellement protégée de l'érosion des vagues. Toutefois, l'action du froid (gel-dégel) et des glaces joue un rôle non négligeable dans le recul de la micro-falaise. L'essentiel de l'érosion est néanmoins attribuable à l'action des vagues et de la marée, la micro-falaise étant exposée à cette activité durant une période journalière de 8 à 10 heures.
