Experimental error analysis of a digital angular stereoscopic PIV system is presented. The paper firstly describes an experimental rig which includes the design of a novel PIV test block for in situ calibration. This allowed the user to set up a static seeded flow volume which was translated in and out of plane to record PIV images using two megapixel CCD cameras positioned for angular stereoscopic viewing. PIV data were collected for a range of camera angles up to and for a range of flow displacements and processed by cross correlation into a set of two-dimensional calibration and flow displacement vectors. These 2D data were then processed into three-dimensional data by the use of geometric and bicubic spline interpolation algorithms and an error analysis performed on the predicted displacements. Results from this analysis have shown optimum system performance will be obtained by using camera angles of between 20 and and f numbers of f16 and higher. The results have also shown a theoretical prediction of system performance derived in previous work, which considers the ratio of out of plane to in plane errors, matches to within 8 and 18% of the experimental system performance.

UV absorption in the combustion phase of spark-ignition engines strongly influences laser-induced-fluorescence measurements and flame-emission techniques because of the attenuation of a laser and/or signal light. This absorption was assessed with spatial, spectral, and temporal resolutions in an optically accessible research engine. Absorption was measured along a line for different crank-angle positions throughout the combustion phase of the engine by use of spectrally resolved transmittance measurements of both broadband illumination from a deuterium lamp and emission of laser-excited hot oxygen. Evaluating the spatial patterns of absorptivity revealed that no increased absorption can be attributed to the flame-front region and that homogeneous absorption cross sections for the whole burned-gas region can be assumed. The temporal change of absorption was shown to depend on the pressure effect with only negligible changes in absorption cross sections. Results obtained from the absorption measurements are applied for spatially resolved corrections of two-dimensional laser-induced-fluorescence measurements of NO concentration fields obtained under different operating conditions.

Particle image velocimetry (PIV) has been used here to study the formation and breakdown of barrel swirl (‘tumble’) in a production geometry, four-stroke, four-valve, motored, spark-ignition, optically accessed internal combustion (IC) engine. The barrel swirl ratio (BSR) of the cylinder head could be enhanced by means of a port face inducer gasket so that the flow processes taking place at low and high swirl ratios could be investigated conveniently. Double-exposed images from planes both parallel and perpendicular to the cylinder axis were recorded at selected crank angles through the induction and compression strokes at a motored engine speed of 1000 r/min, with a wide open throttle, for both high and low BSR cases. The recorded images were interrogated by digital autocorrelation to give two-dimensional maps of instantaneous velocity. In both high and low BSR cases, a barrel or tumbling vortex motion is generated during induction, which is shown to persist throughout the majority of the compression stroke. The details of barrel swirl formation during induction and its subsequent modification during compression, however, differ strongly between the two cases. These differences can be explained qualitatively in terms of two main events; the first being competition during induction between vortices of unequal strength and the second being competition between the large-scale swirl motion and the local flow field generated by piston motion during compression. In the low barrel swirl case, significant dissipation occurs owing to these interactions and consequently the large-scale motion exhibits lower mean velocities and undergoes significant distortion. In the case of high BSR, the competition effects are minimized and a single ordered vertical vortex exhibiting high velocity magnitudes is observed to avoid piston induced distortion. It then moves into the apex of the pent roof combustion chamber where it survives as a single ordered vortex until at least 40° crank angle (CA) before top dead centre (TDC). Limitations and developments of the PIV technique are discussed.
