Cyber-Risk Assessment for Autonomous Ships

Abstract: As a $183.3 Billion industry controlling 90% of all world trade, the shipping community is continuously looking for methods to increase profits while still considering human and environmental safety. As a result of developing technologies and policy that make autonomy a feasible solution, at least three separate organizations are aiming to produce and sail their first autonomous ships by 2020. Thus it is essential to begin assessing their cyber-risk profiles in order to rank and mitigate any vulnerabilities. A… Show more

“…For the rest of this paper, the focus will be on quantitative risk assessments for the reasons above [7]- [9], [11], [16]. The majority of qualitative assessment methods make use of mathematical or computing models, which simplify the problem by only considering the factors that are relevant to the risk.…”

“…Assessing human risk with both static and dynamic risk factors has been done previously [30], [31], although it has primarily been used on sex offenders, where static factors include history and dynamic factors include substance abuse. A significant shift in maritime that shall occur in the future is remote control and autonomy [16], which may shift crew risk factors towards remote operators.…”

“…In some ways, autonomous ships and ports are built on top of IoT technology, as the autonomy requires more digital monitoring (e.g., more sensors), increasing the number of possible cyber vulnerabilities (Tam and Jones 2018). Therefore, again, analysing the communications between computing systems is critical for next generation research capabilities.…”
