Cyber physical system for safety management in smart construction site

Abstract: PurposeConstruction safety has been a long-term problem in the development of the construction industry. An increasing number of smart construction sites have been designed using different techniques to reduce injuries caused by construction accidents and achieve proactive risk control. However, comprehensive smart construction site safety management solutions and applications have yet to be developed. Thus, this study proposes a smart construction site framework for safety management.Design/methodology/approa… Show more

“…To meet the overarching goal of maintaining consistency between as-planned models and as-builts in the construction domain, Anumba et al (2010) built on Shankar and Rajkumar's definitions to describe CPS as the tight integration and bi-directional coordination between virtual design models and the physical construction/constructed facility. This definition has since been employed by existing CPS studies in construction (Jiang et al, 2020b, Eskandar et al, 2020.…”

“…Construction projects have long been known to be prone to accidents significantly affecting workers' safety and wellbeing. To address risks that may impact the safety of construction projects, Jiang et al (2020b) developed a framework for tracking triggers of inconsistencies between physical construction activities and their virtual representations in a simulation model. Genders et al (2016) proposed improving situational awareness of workers by tracking their location and alerting them of possible collisions via their phones.…”

“…Further, the Internet of Things (IoT) has captured researchers' attention in construction workspace safety monitoring and facilitating real-time data acquisition and decision-making. Such growing attention also justifies that IoT is crucial for smart construction sites (Jiang et al , 2021). Recent studies demonstrated the efficacy of IoT technologies in preventing accidents and challenges associated with their implementation in the construction industry.…”

“…It can avoid the impalpable and arbitrary result. Therefore, the analysis showed that the identified papers could be categorized into five clusters: megaproject management in general [29,[116][117][118][119], megaproject sustainability [27,34,[120][121][122][123], megaproject governance [22,[124][125][126][127][128][129], megaproject investment and finance [44,48,92,[130][131][132], and megaproject risk management [95,112,[133][134][135][136]. When the topic of a paper was related to multiple clusters, the paper was classified into the most closely related cluster.…”
