Cyber–Physical Control of Road Freight Transport

Abstract: Abstract-Freight transportation is of outmost importance for our society and is continuously increasing. At the same time, transporting goods on roads accounts for about 26% of all energy consumption and 18% of all greenhouse gas emissions in the European Union. Despite the influence the transportation system has on our energy consumption and the environment, road transportation is mainly done by individual long-haulage trucks with no real-time coordination or global optimization. In this paper, we review how … Show more

“…In [66], the authors outlined a cyber-physical system approach to control large scale road freight transportation problems including minimized fuel consumption with integrated routing and transport planning. An integration approach between vehicles and mobile cloud computing has been discussed in [67].…”

“…In experiments with update intervals different from 40 ms, we adjust the controller to achieve similar closed-loop behavior. For the synchronization experiments, we choose Q i in (10) for all pendulums as suggested by the manufacturer [32] and set R i = 0.1. As we here care to synchronize the cart positions, we set the first diagonal entry of Q sync to 5 and all others to 0.…”

“…Intelligent Transport systems (ITS) fall in the framework of cyber-physical systems due to the interaction between physical systems (vehicles) and a distributed information gathering and dissemination infrastructure. The transportation sector is responsible for a large part of the world's energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions [2]. This is especially important if it is expected that the freight transport will increase considerably in the coming years.…”
