Cyanide Antidotes for Mass Casualties: Water-Soluble Salts of the Dithiane (Sulfanegen) from 3-Mercaptopyruvate for Intramuscular Administration

Abstract: Current cyanide antidotes are administered by IV infusion which is suboptimal for mass casualties. Therefore, in a cyanide disaster intramuscular (IM) injectable antidotes would be more appropriate. We report the discovery of the highly water-soluble sulfanegen triethanolamine as a promising lead for development as an IM injectable cyanide antidote.

“…Subsequently, electrons from the reduction of energy substrates react with the accumulated oxygen to form ROS in the mitochondria matrix (Menna- Barreto & de Castro, 2014;Patterson et al, 2014). Mitochondrial radical scavenger GSH regulates the conversion of oxygen to ROS and the NO cycle in the mitochondria, thus the rate of production of GSH is proportional to the rate of ROS/NO production (Aon et al, 2010;Leirós et al, 2014).…”

“…As mentioned above, there are literature precedents for the cation in 3 and an analysis of these reveals significant conformational flexibility in their molecular structures. Indeed, there are 10 other cations in structures that have three-dimensional coordinates and that do not suffer from disorder [38][39][40][41][42][43][44][45]. Key torsion angle data for these are collected in Table 2.…”
