Cutaneous protothecosis in a dog

Abstract: A dog was infected systemically with Prototheca wickerhamii but showed only cutaneous protothecosis. The lesions appeared progressively and consisted of non-pruritic scrotal swelling and ulceration, cutaneous nodules, crusty ulcerative lesions over the trunk and serous rhinitis. The diagnosis was based on skin biopsy findings and specific culture. Microscopic examination revealed a diffuse pyogranulomatous dermatitis and numerous protothecal organisms of different sizes within the cytoplasm of phagocytic cells… Show more

“…P. wickerhamii is predominantly isolated from clinical cases of human infections (Bianchi et al, 2000;Matsuda & Matsumoto, 1992). P. zopfii causes infections in animals, particularly of diary cows or dogs (Blogg & Sykes, 1995;Ginel et al, 1997;Schultze et al, 1998). Worldwide, P. zopfii has been identified as inducing a therapy-resistant inflammation of the mammary gland in dairy cows that may lead to severe economic losses in an infected herd.…”

“…Nos cães, os casos de prototecose cutânea devem ser diferenciados principalmente de fungos como Blastomyces sp, Cryptococcus sp, Candida sp, Histoplasma capsulatum, Coccidioides immitis, Geotrichum candidum e Pneumocystis sp, além de protozoários como Caryospora sp (BLOGG & SYKES, 1995;GINEI et al, 1997;MURRAY et al, 2007).
