Custom CMOS Reed Solomon coder for the Hubble Space Telescope

Abstract: This paper reports a single 8. 2" by 8.4mm, 200,000 transistor CMOS chip implementation of the Reed Solomon code required by the Space Telescope. The chip features a 10 MH5 sustained byte rate independent of error pattern. The 1.6pmCMOS integrated circuit has complete decoder and encoder functions and uses a single data/system clock. Block lengths up to 266 bytes as well as shortened codes are supported with no external buffering. Erasure correct ions as well as random error corrections are supported with prog… Show more

“…Large state controllers can almost always be partitioned into small distributed state machines. Two full custom developments [5,6] predecessor state for 5< is the code for Si and the constants for this code are input to the BTS network. A general block diagram is shown in Figure 2, where the next state logic is a general BTS network.…”

“…For example RS codes have been applied to the compact disc (CD) system [l], advanced train control systems [2], the Hubble space telescope [3] and channel coding for compressed video services [4]. RS codes operate over algebraic structures called finite fields, denoted GF @") , and because of the ease with which they can be implemented in digital hardware, these fields are usually restricted to those of the form GF(2'") [5].…”
