The main research aim is to verify the efficiency of wet methods of biodiesel cleaning and to establish optimal and rational parameters for biodiesel purification and disposing of its cleaning waste. The efficiency of biodiesel washing was studied by means of volumetric, bubble and aerosol washing. Volumetric washing of biodiesel was carried out with the use of a blade mixer with three blades on a shaft and a four-blade agitator with sloping blades. One of the three methods of biodiesel washing studied can be recommended for practical use – aerosol washing with medium- and large-grained washing to be carried out for at least 4-5 hours, while fine-grained – for a longer time. The use of waste from the purification of biodiesel as a cosubstrate in biogas plants will almost double the output of biogas, which will significantly reduce the payback period of biogas plants.

Drilling muds with less environmental impact are highly desired over conventional diesel-based mud systems, especially in light of the emerging strict environmental laws. In this article, a novel oil-in-water (O/W) emulsion drilling fluid formulated with a methyl ester extracted from Indian mango seed oil was evaluated. The effect of the weight percent of different constituents of the emulsion/suspension including the oil phase, bentonite, and polyanionic cellulose polymer on the rheology and the fluid loss was examined. The methyl ester oil phase/mud system displayed superior physical, chemical, rheological and filtration properties relative to the diesel and the mango seed oil. Eco-toxicity of the methyl ester and diesel (O/W) emulsion mud systems was assessed using the acute lethal concentration test. The Indian mango methyl ester (O/W) emulsion mud displayed much less impact on fish population. Flow characteristics collected from the flow model at 85 °C suggested excellent shear thinning behavior of the Indian mango methyl ester (IMME) (O/W) emulsion mud. Moreover, the IMME (O/W) emulsion displayed strong pseudoplastic behavior, an attractive feature in a drilling mud, with increasing clay content and polymer concentration. The methyl ester mud was thermally stable over a wide range of the constituent concentrations. Furthermore, a particle size analysis revealed that engineered drilling muds targeting suspension of particles with certain size range can be formulated by changing the volume fraction of the methyl ester in the mud system.

Epoxy nanofiltration membranes were fabricated by the step polymerization of a primary diamine and a diepoxide or triepoxide conomomer. Membrane selectivity and flux were tuned by changing the identity of the diepoxides and by increasing the concentration of triepoxides in the polymerization. The membranes were used to separate even chain length saturated fatty acids (FAs) and saturated fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs) that possessed molecular weights between 80 – 300 g mol−1. Our membranes show excellent selectivities of up to 100:1 for the separation of the C4–C18 FAMEs. The flux of the FAMEs through the membranes showed an exponential dependence based on the number of carbons. Fabrication of thin epoxy membranes with thicknesses of 150 nm allowed for an increase in flux of FAMEs through the membrane and demonstrated that these separations can be used under industrially relevant conditions
