Since the impending warning of fossil fuel inadequacy, researchers’ focus has shifted to alternative fuel generation. This resulted in the use of a wide variety of renewable biomass sources for making biofuels. Biofuels made from biomass are seen as the most promising long-term strategy for addressing issues associated with conventional energy sources, atypical climate change, and greenhouse gas emissions. Hydrocarbons may be efficiently extracted from biomass, which contains a lot of sugars. Biofuels including bioethanol, biodiesel, biohydrogen, and biogas can be produced from biomass for widespread usage in transportation, industry, and households. In recent years, there have been numerous reports of breakthroughs in the manufacturing of biofuels and biogas. This paper examines the big picture of biogas generation, with an emphasis on the many forms of biomass utilization in both commercial and residential settings in rural areas.

This review showcases a comprehensive analysis of studies that highlight the different conversion procedures attempted across the globe. The resources of biogas production along with treatment methods are presented. The effect of different governing parameters like feedstock types, pretreatment approaches, process development, and yield to enhance the biogas productivity is highlighted. Biogas applications, for example, in heating, electricity production, and transportation with their global share based on national and international statistics are emphasized. Reviewing the world research progress in the past 10 years shows an increase of ~ 90% in biogas industry (120 GW in 2019 compared to 65 GW in 2010). Europe (e.g., in 2017) contributed to over 70% of the world biogas generation representing 64 TWh. Finally, different regulations that manage the biogas market are presented. Management of biogas market includes the processes of exploration, production, treatment, and environmental impact assessment, till the marketing and safe disposal of wastes associated with biogas handling. A brief overview of some safety rules and proposed policy based on the world regulations is provided. The effect of these regulations and policies on marketing and promoting biogas is highlighted for different countries. The results from such studies show that Europe has the highest promotion rate, while nowadays in China and India the consumption rate is maximum as a result of applying up-to-date policies and procedures.

Biogas has been noted as a steady rising source of sustainable energy, but very few are aware of its innate potential and how to efficiently harness its energy. So far, issues of sustainability have been solved via the use of human waste, which can never be depleted. The commercialization and adaptability of biogas from human waste depend on the adoption of the usual septic tank and an efficient technology to enhance biogas quality. In this project, the design and construction of an efficient biogas compression system were proposed. This system is meant to compress the biogas for storage and commercial activity. It was observed that the extraction and enhancement chambers of the construction had >60% improvement. It is recommended that further work be carried out on the full automation of the system proposed.
