Current symptomatology in multiple sclerosis and neuromyelitis optica

Abstract: Several classical MS symptoms and signs are more frequent in NMO patients than MS patients, which may be caused by the differences in the severity of inflammation, and localization and extensiveness of demyelinated lesions.

“…It was reported that the primary fatigue in patients with MS may stem from centrally mediated processes caused by the conduction issues such as demyelination or axonal loss in CNS [7]. In NMOSD and MS, fatigue has been reported to impair activities of the daily living [6,[8][9][10]. In MS patients, the prevalence of fatigue was reported to be 50% to 90%, and more than 20 trials were performed to determine the appropriate treatment for fatigue [6,11].…”

“…Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a field of neurology that has undergone tremendous advances within only the last 15 years . The advent of immunological therapies has transformed outcome for patients with relapsing−remitting disease, although the effect on chronic progressive disease is less certain.…”

“…Patients with NMO can develop several pain syndromes. Up to the present time, a high prevalence of pain has been reported in this population, which is described as more intense and less responsive to usual treatments when compared to those patients with multiple sclerosis (Kanamori et al, 2011;Qian et al, 2012;Kim et al, 2012;Muto et al, 2015). The most frequently described pain syndrome is neuropathic, although scarce studies have made use of a validated screening instrument for its diagnosis (Zhao et al, 2014;Asseyer et al, 2018).…”

“…Concomitant sensory and motor symptoms were the most frequent symptoms, followed by visual disturbances (Park et al, 2014). Another study described that 27.1% of the NMO subgroup presented this phaenomenon (Muto et al, 2015).…”
