Coastal areas have become an important part of Indonesia's evolving economy, with a variety of commercial activities taking place. The island of Java has both northern and southern coastal areas, each with its own distinctive characteristics and products. The studies about coastal development through its product value chain are still limited. This study aimed to determine the value chain of fishery products in Java to provide recommendations for enhancing coastal management. For the northern coast, milkfish and ariid catfish from Juwana Coast (Pati Regency, Central Java) were selected, while Whiteleg Shrimp from Mendit Coast and Trisik Coast of Kulon Progo Regency, Yogyakarta were chosen to represent the southern coast. The study involved 48 respondents, including small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), farmers, fishermen, wholesalers, middlemen, retailers, restaurants, and consumers. The analysis techniques used in this study included Porter’s value chain, Hayami’s added value, Return/Cost (R/C) Ratio, and marketing margin analysis. The results of the study revealed that the products followed various channels in the value chain, with longer chains leading to higher prices for the end consumers. The findings also indicated that processed and creatively packaged products tend to command higher prices and generate greater profits. Coastal management should not only focus on upstream activities but also consider downstream processes to increase the value of coastal products. Efforts to enhance coastal management should consider key actors and government interventions through developing the coastal local products. Highlight Research The coastal area of Java Island makes a significant contribution to the local economy. The supply chain of Whiteleg Shrimp, Ariid Catfish, and Milkfish involves various actors who play important roles in maintaining the distribution of coastal products. Value chain analysis reveals opportunities to increase and improve the quality of products to enhance their worth. It is necessary to enhance coastal management by involving local institutions, the government, and the private sector.

Background Rice-fish symbiosis, as an ecological and green aquaculture model, is an effective measure to relieve the environmental stress from intensive aquaculture. Compared with traditional aquaculture, the altered rearing pattern and environment will make differences in muscle nutrient and quality, intestinal microbiota, body metabolism, and even disease resistance in fish. Results To investigate this, we explored the differences between rice-tilapia (aRT and bRT) and tank-tilapia (aTT and bTT) models at the periods before and after rice flowering using 16S rRNA sequencing and untargeted metabolomics. The results showed that compared with tilapia reared in the tank model, the fish body length and weight, the muscle total umami amino acid, and monounsaturated fatty acid content were obviously higher in the rice-fish model, especially after rice flowering. Compared with other groups, the intestinal microbiota diversity of fish in the bRT group was significantly higher; the dominant microbiota was Bacteroidetes and Firmicutes at the phylum level, Bacteroides and Turicibacter at the genus level, and the relative abundances of Gram-negative, potentially pathogenic, and stress-tolerant bacteria were the highest, lowest, and highest, respectively. Besides, the differential metabolite analysis indicated that rice-fish symbiosis improved the metabolic profiles and modulated the metabolic pathways in tilapia. Moreover, the correlation analysis of 16S sequencing and metabolomics showed that Bacteroides showed a positive correlation with many metabolites related to amino acid, fatty acid, and lipid metabolism. Conclusions In summary, rice flowering improves the tilapia muscle nutrient, intestinal microbiota diversity, and disease resistance and modulates the host metabolism to acclimatize the comprehensive environment in rice-fish symbiosis. Specifically, rice flowering alters the microbiota abundance involved in amino acid, fatty acid, and lipid metabolism, resulting in improving the muscle nutrient and quality through the crosstalk of gut microbial and host metabolism. Our study will provide not only new insight into the gut microbiota-metabolism-phenotype axis, but also strong support for the promotion and application of rice-fish symbiosis in aquaculture.

The shrimp nursery infrastructure consists of nursery tanks, mechanical filters, biological filters, and ultraviolet (UV) filters. This study aimed to simulate the water level elevation (head) of shrimp nursery infrastructure, especially nursery tanks. The placement of the nursery greatly affects the elevation of the water table owing to the loss of energy (headloss) that occurs in the flow. The nursery tub used in this study was round and consisted of four tubs made of fiber resin measuring 250 cm in diameter and 120 cm in height. The bottom of the tub was placed at an elevation of +40 cm above the ground. The simulation was conducted for 24 hours. The results of the EPANET 2.2 simulation showed head fluctuations in each nursery with the highest elevation (1.38 m and the lowest (1.20 m, from the data. The head fluctuated constantly after 6 h of the flow. The optimal pipe diameters were 3" (80 mm) PVC and 4" (110 mm) PVC.
