The first mirror test for ITER in JET with carbon walls has been completed. Thirty polycrystalline Mo mirrors including four coated with a 1 µm rhodium (Rh) film were exposed to plasma in the divertor region and in the main chamber. The mirrors were installed in eight cassettes of pan-pipe shape. The reflectivity of all mirrors exposed in the divertor has been degraded by 80-90% because of the formation of thick (>20 µm) flaking co-deposits on surfaces. Only small reflectivity losses (5-10%) occurred on mirrors located at the channel mouth of the cassettes from the main chamber wall. This is due to the in situ removal of deposited species by charge exchange neutrals. Deuterium, 12 C and 9 Be are the main isotopes detected on surfaces, but other isotopes ( 13 C) are also found in some locations, thus indicating differences in the material migration. Rhodium coatings with an initial reflectivity that is 30% better than that of pure Mo survived the test without detachment, but their resultant reflectivity was the same as that of the exposed Mo surfaces.

Disruption mitigation by massive gas injection in JET

Abstract. Disruption mitigation is mandatory for ITER in order to reduce forces, to mitigate heat loads during the thermal quench (TQ) and to avoid runaway electrons. A fast disruption mitigation valve (DMV) has been installed at JET to study mitigation by massive gas injection (MGI). Different gas species and amounts have been investigated with respect to timescales and mitigation efficiency. We discuss the mitigation of halo currents as well as sideways forces during vertical displacement events, the mitigation of heat loads by increased energy dissipation through radiation, the heat loads which could arise by asymmetric radiation and the suppression of runaway electrons.

Particle transport in density gradient driven TE mode turbulence

The turbulent transport of main ion and trace impurities in a tokamak device in the presence of steep electron density gradients has been studied. The parameters are chosen for trapped electron (TE) mode turbulence, driven primarily by steep electron density gradients relevant to H-mode physics, but with a transition to temperature gradient driven turbulence as the density gradient flattens [1]. Results obtained through non-linear (NL) and quasilinear (QL) gyrokinetic simulations using the GENE code [2, 3] are compared with results obtained from a fluid model. Main ion and impurity transport is studied by examining the balance of convective and diffusive transport, as quantified by the density gradient corresponding to zero particle flux (peaking factor). Scalings are obtained for the impurity peaking with the background electron density gradient and the impurity charge number. It is shown that the impurity peaking factor is weakly dependent on impurity charge and significantly smaller than the driving electron density gradient.
