Current Status of the Evaluation and Management of Lupus Patients and Future Prospects

Abstract: The vastly diverse nature of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) poses great challenges to clinicians and patients, as well as to research and drug development efforts. Precise management of lupus patients would be advanced by the ability to identify specific abnormalities operative in individual patients at the time of encounter with the clinician. Advances in new technologies and bioinformatics have greatly improved the understanding of the pathophysiology of SLE. Recent research has focused on the discovery … Show more

“…55–58 Although these measurements are used commonly in clinical trials, they are infrequently used in clinical practice. 59 60 The frequency and severity of SLE flares are indicators of global disease control and relevant in both clinical trials and in clinical practice but are not uniformly defined yet. 59–62 Reduction in steroid use is a key treatment goal in SLE, due to an increased understanding of the risks associated with long-term exposure.…”

“…The task of managing patients with SLE is crucial in order to reduce the risk of irreversible organ damage [ 30 , 31 ]. This is not only vital for maintaining the health-related quality of life of the patients [ 32 , 33 ], but also for managing the direct costs associated with the treatment of SLE [ 34 , 35 ]. However, this task presents significant challenges due to the heterogeneous nature of SLE, which is characterized by variations in disease progression [ 36 , 37 ].…”

“…SLE affects most systems of the body and hence, patients usually go through a lengthy and difficult diagnosis process in which their symptoms may be attributed to medically unexplainable or stress-induced problems. [ 24 25 ]…”
