Current status of intragastric balloon for obesity treatment

Abstract: Endoscopic bariatric therapy may be a useful alternative to pharmacological treatment for obesity, and it provides greater efficacy with lower risks than do conventional surgical procedures. Among the various endoscopic treatments for obesity, the intragastric balloon is associated with significant efficacy in body weight reduction and relief of comorbid disease symptoms. “…With this procedure, an inflatable balloon is placed endoscopically in the stomach. The balloon facilitates weight loss by activating gastric stretch receptors producing a feeling of satiety, decreasing intragastric volume limiting food consumption, and delaying gastric emptying . A general recommendation for most IGBs is that they should be removed within 6 months of placement to reduce complications such as gastric ulceration .…”

“…It is very effective, non-invasive, totally reversible and the safest method among all bariatric procedures [54,55]. Endoscopic bariatric treatment may be an alternative to pharmacological treatment of obesity and provides higher efficiency with lower risk in comparison to conventional surgical procedures [56]. A very crucial element of the treatment of bariatric patients is the change of eating habits for the rest of patients' lives [57,58].…”
