Dermatophytes are keratinophilic fungus that infects skin, hair and nails. They belong to the genera Trichophyton, Microsporum and Epidermophyton. Some infections are caused by non dermatophytic filamentous fungi which are often resistant to treatment used for infections caused by dermatophytes. Hence this study was taken up to isolate and identify the causative agents of dermatophytosis and guide in the institution of proper therapy. Methods: All skin, hair and nail samples from suspected cases of Dermatophytosis were processed according to the standard microbiological procedures. Results: Dermatophytosis was more common in males aged 21-30 years. Trichophyton mentagrophytes (T. mentagrophytes) was the most common isolate, followed by Trichophyton rubrum (T. rubrum) and Trichophyton tonsurans (T. tonsurans). Around 25% of the isolates were non dermatophytes like Scopulariopsis brevecaulis, Aspergillus species, Fusarium species and Acremonium species. Dermatophytic infections take a long time to diagnose and treat. It is only by culture, we can achieve the definitive identification of the infecting fungus. This is especially important in cases of nail and skin infections caused by non dermatophytic filamentous fungi which are often resistant to therapy caused by dermatophytic infections. In addition, isolation of the fungus will help in differentiating it from other skin conditions like Dermatitis and Psoriasis.

Background: Tinea corporis and cruris are dermatophytes that infect the skin, and they are caused by Trichophyton sp., Microsporum sp., and Epidermophyton sp. Dermatophyte fungal-infect keratin-containing skin classified by the body’s location, such as tinea corporis (skin besides haired area, body, hands, or feet) and tinea cruris (groin & perineal region). Purpose: To evaluate the clinical profiles and treatments of tinea corporis and cruris at Dermatology and Venereology (DV) outpatient clinic Dr. Soetomo General Academic Hospital in 2018. Methods: A retrospective-descriptive study based on medical records of DV outpatient clinic Dr. Soetomo General Academic Hospital, Surabaya. Data collected from August to December 2019. Tinea corporis and cruris profiles evaluation based on age, sex, occupation, precipitating factors, complaints, illness duration, family history, lesion’s location and description, and therapy. Result: A total of 164 patients (35 tinea corporis, 76 tinea cruris, and 53 tinea corporis and cruris), predominantly female, age 46–55 years, came treatment less-than-a-month cases, excessive sweating, itching, tinea corporis lesion’s location on the face and body, tinea cruris in groin, tinea corporis and cruris on body and groin, erythematous macules, firm borders, active margins, scales, central healing, positive KOH 10–20% examination, miconazole cream therapy 2%, griseofulvin therapy, griseofulvin oral and ketoconazole cream 2% combination therapy. Discussion: Tinea corporis and cruris are common in females as their history and symptoms supported by the characteristics of laboratory examination, the presence of hyphae in potassium hydroxide (KOH) 10–20%. Most patients were prescribed with oral griseofulvin, especially in large lesions cases.

Introduction: Genital dermatophytosis is also known as tinea genitalis and pubogenital tinea, and it is one of the superficial fungal infections caused by dermatophytes. The classical clinical presentations in an immunocompetent person consist of an erythematous annular plaque with slightly raised scaly centrifugally advancing border and central clearing. The lesions in patients with HIV/AIDS or immunosuppressed individuals, can be extensive and without central clearing.Purpose: The present study was conducted to know the current scenario and possible mode of transmission of tinea genitalis in males and females and to isolate the causative dermatophyte. Materials and Methods: Patients with dermatophytic lesions in genital area and KOH, and/ or culture positive were enrolled in the study. Samples were collected from the active borders of the lesions after cleaning it with 70% ethyl alcohol and were inoculated on Sabouraud Dextrose Agar (SDA), supplemented with chloramphenicol and cycloheximide. None of the patients had any immunosuppression except 2 (0.72%) had diabetes mellitus and one (0.36%) patient gave history of atopy. Result: Out of a total 276 samples, 274 (99.27%) were Trichophyton interdigitale, and two male patients (0.72%) had tinea genitalis due to Trichophyton rubrum. History of use of topical steroid was present in 202 (73.18%) patients. Conclusion:Patients coming with tinea cruris should also be examined for the presence of tinea genitals, because according to our statistics 22.14% of them also had concomitant tinea genitals. History of having used topical corticosteroids should always be taken from them, because it results in extensive, atypical and extension of the lesions to the neighbouring anatomical sites.
