Current Research Trends on Dry, Near-Dry and Powder Mixed Electrical Discharge Machining

Abstract: Electrical discharge machining (EDM) technique has been widely used in modern metal working industry for producing complex cavities in dies and moulds, which are otherwise difficult to create by conventional machining. The process has the advantage of being able to machine hardened tool steels. However, its low machining efficiency and poor surface finish restricted its further applications. To address these problems, one relatively new technique used to improve the efficiency and surface finish is EDM in the … Show more

“…The research on the processing of non-conductive materials was also conducted at several research centers in Malaysia. The work published by the research team under the supervision of Dr. Muhammed Abdul Maleque at the International Islamic University of Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur) [76] demonstrated the results of the processing of technical ZrO 2 , wholly covered with a casing of platinum copper. The obtained result proved the ability and effectiveness of EDM processing in kerosene; copper residues from the surface of the ceramic workpiece were successfully removed.…”

“…Titanium and titanium alloys present several excellent properties such as very high strength-to-weight ratio, excellent corrosion resistance, light weight and the ability to maintain their properties at extremely high temperatures [1][2][3][4][5][6]. Research on the surface integrity and surface finish of titanium alloys is becoming more significant for the aerospace industries as it is used to produce high quality machined surface components and requires high accuracy [7][8][9].…”
