Visual impairment (VI) can significantly interfere in the child’s daily activities and quality of life, having a negative effect on their development and learning. The aim of the study was to determine the prevalence of VI and associated demographic factors in students examined during the program “Moçambique te vejo melhor”. This study was cross-sectional and retrospective, based on the 2018/19 edition of the program. Eye examinations were performed in secondary school students, aged between 12 and 20 years, of five districts in Nampula province. The examination included visual acuity, non-cycloplegic refraction and assessment of the anterior and posterior segment and ocular adnexa. The prevalence of uncorrected, presenting and best-corrected VI found was 18.3%, 10.8%, and 5.0%, respectively. Refractive error (RE) had a prevalence of 24.7%, and the age groups between 15–17 years and 18–20 years were significantly associated with myopia (with OR: 4.9 and OR: 8.8, respectively), as well as the 11th and 12th grade (OR: 8.1 and OR: 10.7, respectively), and Malema district had association with myopia (ORa: 0.4) and hyperopia (ORa: 0.4 and OR: 0.3) as a protective factor. The prevalence of RE and VI was relatively high, showing the need for greater intervention at the school level.

Objective: To determine the effect of amblyopia patching therapy on visual outcome in young and adults at 6th and 12th week. Study Design: Quasi-experimental study. Place and Duration of Study: Armed Forces Institute of Ophthalmology Rawalpindi, Pakistan, from Sep 2018 to Jan 2020. Methodology: Out of 110, follow up was successfully completed by 91 eyes. Subjects were divided into young and adult based on age. Age ranging from 5-12 years included in the young group and adult group included those ranging from 13-20 years. Anisometropic amblyopia was considered. Amblyopia due to any other disease were excluded. Subjects were advised patching therapy daily for 4 hours in the affected eye. Follow up was 3 weekly for 12 weeks and the effect of patching therapy was assessed by visual improvement. Statistical analysis was done with SPSS version 21. Result: Out of 91 eyes with amblyopia, 51 (56.6%) were included in the young group while 40 (43.4%) were included in the adult group. In the young group, visual improvement was seen in 40 (78.4%) while in the adult group 24 (60%) showed improvement in vision. Mean visual improvement in young was 1.66 ± 1.099 while 1.03 ± 0.944 in the adult group. Maximum visual improvement in both groups was seen till the 6th week of patching. Conclusion: Patching therapy is effective even at later ages too. However, continuing patching for more than 6 weeks doesn’t show much improvement in vision.

Ambliopia didefinisikan sebagai kondisi penurunan tajam penglihatan pada satu atau kedua mata walaupun dengan koreksi tajam penglihatan terbaik (best corrected visual acuity), yang tidak berhubungan dengan kelainan struktural anatomi mata ataupun jaras penglihatan. Ambliopia merupakan penyebab penurunan tajam penglihatan paling sering pada anak dan dewasa. Sebagian besar kasus dapat dicegah dan reversibel apabila terdeteksi dini dan mendapat terapi yang tepat. Terapi ambliopia mencakup menghilangkan penyebab terhalangnya aksis penglihatan, koreksi kelainan refraksi yang ada, dilanjutkan terapi untuk merangsang penggunaan mata yang mengalami ambliopia. Amblyopia is defined as reduction of best-corrected visual acuity in one eye or both that cannot be attributed to any structural abnormality of the eye or visual pathways. Amblyopia is the most common cause of decreased visual acuity in children and adults. Most cases are preventable and reversible if detected early and with appropriate therapy. Treatment includes removal of any obstruction of the visual axis, correction of any significant refractive errors, followed by treatment designed to encourage utilization of the amblyopic eye.
