Current limiting soft starter for three phase induction motor drive system using PWM AC chopper

Abstract: This study presents a new current-limiting soft-starter for a three-phase induction motor drive system using pulse width modulation (PWM) AC chopper. A novel configuration of three-phase PWM AC chopper using only four insulated gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs) is also proposed. The proposed control strategy does not require zero crossing detection circuits, which employed in thyristorised soft starters. It requires only one current sensor. The duty ratio of the chopper IGBTs is obtained from the closed-loop cu… Show more

“…At the same time, such a large starting current will greatly impact the stator winding and rotor bar, causing squirrel-cage fracture and motor faults. In addition, this huge starting current will rapidly wear the gears in the transmission equipment [12][13][14][15][16][17].…”

“…A three phase PWM AC chopper, has eight IGBTs, feeds an IM is presented in [24]. A configuration of the three-phase chopper with six IGBTs for soft starting of three phase IM is presented in [25], while a four-IGBT configuration is presented in [26]. However, these configurations have low PF.…”
