“…Finally, as only 50% of the randomly selected patients consented to participate in the study, selection bias might also play a role in the sense of an overrepresentation of more healthy, cognitively unimpaired elderly. On the other hand, the prevalence rates of MCI found in our sample are comparable to other well-designed studies (2,37).…”

“…Depending on sample and study methodology, the prevalence of MCI ranges from 1% to 19%. Conversion rates to dementia between 4% and 11% per year were found (2). Persons with MCI can thus be regarded as a population at an elevated risk for developing dementia.…”

“…In most, the focus was on inflammatory processes thought to be associated with aging. The Italian Longitudinal Study on Aging (ILSA) found that vascular risk factors influenced incident mild cognitive impairment and the rate of progression to dementia (Solfrizzi et al, 2004;Panza et al, 2005). The link between vascular and long term cognitive health suggests that dietary components that reduce vascular risk may also reduce risk of cognitive decline or Alzheimer's disease development.…”

“…In the fifteen year period since its publication, public awareness has grown and diagnostic approaches improved and as a consequence, there has been a much greater emphasis on the importance of early intervention in the community at a stage when a patient may benefit the most (Moniz-Cook and Woods, 1997). To reflect this emphasis, older people with MCI have been included in this review on the basis that in many cases they will progress to developing dementia (at a rate of approximately 15% per year, Panza et al 2005). A range of psychotherapeutic approaches will be investigated including support groups for adjustment to diagnosis, individual psychotherapy, group programs, life review, and intergenerational community schemes.…”
