Current developments in pulp therapy for primary teeth

Abstract: Premature loss of primary teeth can lead to malocclusion and/or to esthetic, phonetic, or functional problems. Maintaining the integrity and health of the oral tissues is the primary objective of pulp treatment. It is important to attempt to preserve pulp vitality whenever possible; however, when this is not feasible, the pulp can be entirely eliminated without significantly compromising the function of the tooth. This article provides a concise review of the normal histological characteristics of the primary … Show more

“…For primary teeth, the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends direct pulp capping with mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) or calcium hydroxide, only in traumatic pinpoint exposures of the pulp. Other suggested treatment alternatives include pulpotomy with MTA or calcium hydroxide paste utilizing solutions of Buckley's formocresol, ferric sulfate , and sodium hypochlorite ; pulpectomy ; and extraction .…”

“…The main purpose of endodontic treatments is to sustain the integrity and function of teeth and periradicular tissues . As with permanent teeth, pulpectomy is a common endodontic procedure in primary teeth and aims to preserve them until natural exfoliation . Chemomechanical preparation is a crucial step of pulpectomy that comprises both shaping and cleaning of the root canal system .…”

“…[2] In recent years, several materials have been used for pulpotomy and pulpotomies were classified in three major categories as; devitalizing, preserving and regenerating in accordance with the agents' effects on the pulp. [3] It is a common view that a pulp dressing material should be bactericidal, protecting root pulp, promoting healing and not harming the pulp and periradicular tissues. [4] Unlike the Portland cement in Mineral Trioxide Aggregate (MTA), Tricalcium Silicate based dental materials are developed by in-vitro synthesis of the high-purity raw materials.…”
