Current behavioral assessments of movement disorders in children

Abstract: Pediatric movement disorders (PMDs) are common and have recently received increasing attention. As these disorders have special clinical features, the selection of appropriate behavioral assessment tools that can clearly distinguish movement disorders from other diseases (eg, epilepsy and neuromuscular disorders) is crucial for achieving an accurate diagnosis and treatment. However, few studies have focused on behavioral assessments in children. The present report attempts to provide a critical review of the a… Show more

“…Standardized videotape counting protocols have been tested for many years to develop a practicable, time‐efficient, objective, reliable, and stable tic rating. Today, the most established video‐based assessment of tic severity is the MRVS 3,22 . Because of several scale shortcomings, we developed and tested a revised version, the MRVS‐R.…”

“…With regard to tools for the assessment of PD, the UPDRS, as a subjective scale, has been constantly modified to include more content of nonmotor items, along with the H&Y, which cannot perform real-time behavioral assessment synchronously with documentation of these motor fluctuations. More accurate evaluation is desired based on the principles of objectification, multipurpose, and simplification, 1 , 2 , 22) in particular because these tests can perform real-time assessment. In our opinion, the use of innovative technologies, such as wearable sensors and the mobile internet, may enable real-time behavioral measurement.…”
