Current approaches to the diagnosis and treatment of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis in Europe: the AIR survey

Abstract: This review presents the results of the 2013 Advancing IPF Research (AIR) survey, which assessed current approaches to the diagnosis and treatment of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) by experienced physicians. A total of 149 physicians, predominantly from European countries, replied to the 28-question survey. “…Similar needs have been identified in other studies in IPF. For example, the difficulties faced by HCPs in reliably diagnosing IPF [13,[18][19][20], the need for improved multidisciplinary care [21][22][23], the need for improved access to treatment [24], the need for improved awareness of clinical guidelines [18,25] and the need for improved palliative care [26]. This initiative also emphasised the need for improved disease awareness and information, consistent with two recent PG-informed reports from the British Lung Foundation [14,27,28].…”

“…This percentage was even higher in the first AIR survey, reaching 49 % in total [3]. Increased availability of antifibrotic drugs in France and other Western European countries has reduced the use of other therapies in follow-up to 7% [4].…”

“…The idea of performing this survey was prompted by the 2013 Advancing IPF Research (AIR) survey arranged by Vincent Cottin, whose results were published in 2014 [3]. The aim of this survey was to assess current approaches to the diagnosis and treatment of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) by experienced physicians.…”

“…This contrasts to a French survey reporting that 56% always involved a MDD, 37% sometimes involved MDD, and only 7% never involved MDD in the diagnosis of IPF. 22 In another recent survey from France, Cottin et al reported that MDD was never used by 4%, often used by 20%, and always used by 60% of survey respondents. 23 Therefore, our results suggest that, although MDD access and utilization may be quite high in Canada (80% of respondents), there remain a substantial number of practitioners without access to MDD in comparison to other developed countries.…”
