Current and Future Prospects of Torque Teno Virus

Abstract: Human health has a significant importance and it is directly affected by a number of factors like different diseases including microbial and viral infections. Up till now we have paid attention to the disease causing viruses and pathogens and less has been investigated about the usefulness of normal viral flora. One such orphan virus is Torque Teno Virus (TTV). The virus is present in healthy as well as diseased population, indicating its high prevalence. The virus is ubiquitous to human body as it is present … Show more

“…This study found no statistically significant difference between TTV positive and TTV negative individuals regarding the level of AST, ALT, other laboratory and ultrasonography finding which agree with study of Bostan et al [30], but contrary to other studies [8,31]. Rocchi et al [32] attributed the pathologic role of TTV to the capability of some isolates to activate production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, thus accelerate the severity of inflammatory disorders.…”

“…There are at least 41 species infecting humans that are recognized by the ICTV based on the ORF1 region [ 46 ]. Some viruses, such as TTV 1, 12, 13, 16, SEN virus D and H, have been considered potential causal agents of hepatitis [ 14 , 48 50 ].…”

“…As such, TTV is globally prevalent and has often been noticed in the blood of even healthy individuals in a very high proportion [17,21]. Firstly a high prevalence rate and secondly the highly heterogeneous nature of its DNA have raised a serious concern.…”

“…However, it is not clear whether these variants have some biological or pathogenic differences also [15]. Of course, few recent reports point to an association between genotypes/genogroups and the type of disease caused [17,18]. This needs further extensive investigation.…”
