The exhaustion of the fossil fuel supply of the world is an understood eventuality, considering the pace at which these resources are being exploited the world over. More so when the global energy requirements are increasing without much interruption; suffice to say the current state of operations in the energy arena is not going to last long. Alternative energy resources, in this worldview, provide an auspicious avenue of fulfilling the burgeoning human thirst for energy. The impact of these alternative energy resources utilization will be twofold: the satiation of the energy demand, and the culmination of the global warming resulting from the incessant use of the fossil fuels. The urge for alternative resources of energy is key to survival and demand of future. In comparison to all the alternative resources of energy, Hydro power present better results in terms of efficiency and long term viability.The viability of Hydro Power is subject to its high initial cost and major construction with no return in the initial phase of construction. This work is aimed at presenting the technical and financial aspects of Micro-Hydro power. The financial assessment is based on the Net Present Value (NPV), Internal Rate of Return and Benefit to Cost Ratio (B/C). Apart from the social benefits to the residents and improving the quality of life, the financial feasibility is tested on the basis the above parameters and results shows the micro hydro are feasible in the lights of mentioned parameters. The proposition is tested and implemented on three different case studies, i.e. Ajmera Hydro power plant, Bersa Payen and Sheri Dumrai HPP. The data shows successful results in the all the mentioned cases.

Recently, the utilization of low-head hydroelectric technologies has received a great attention for the expansion of distributed power systems into isolated regions that are difficult to be connected to the electrical grid, especially in developing countries. The use of gravitational vortex hydropower systems can be a renewable and suitable option to expand electricity access and promote development in these remote regions, which are concomitantly rich in hydric resources, due to this system can operate with low head without the need of a large reservoir and installation area. In this study, the performance of the inlet channel and basin of a gravitational water vortex turbine was investigated. Two inlet channels and two basin geometries were numerically analysed in Ansys Fluent software. The velocity and vortex height were calculated and compared for each setting. It was found that the inlet channel with conical basin tended to produce more symmetric vortex in comparisons with that generated by the cylindrical geometry. Additionally, the conical basin maximized the flow velocity on the water surface area.

Wind and Solar Energy Resources Potential across Coastal Mega Cities, of Pakistan

Pakistan has the vast potential of renewable energy (RE) resources but still, rely on the pricy fossil fuel-based power generation. The developed nation work on the shifting of conventional resources based generation into renewable energy-based generation, but Pakistan still engages to negotiate fossil fuel trade. However, Pakistan has 1100Km of the coastal belt that acquires the huge potential of RE. The different metrological department measure the RE exists in Pakistan, the World Bank Group is one of them. The World Bank group observe the solar and wind potential across the megacity of Pakistan including Karachi. In this research, we have explored the World Bank efforts by highlighting the availability of the solar and wind power across coastal megacity, of Pakistan. The main focus is on the estimates of global horizontal irradiation (GHI) parameter of solar and wind speed for wind resources along with the yearly values provided by the World Bank. The wind power depend on wind speed across so, in this research, the wind speed is observed across the coastal megacity of Pakistan for the wind turbine installation. The wind speed data is occupied from the World Bank site to explore wind model for the future power supply across Karachi of Pakistan. Similarly, the solar irradiation calculation is very much important to install solar models. So we have select the GHI for the solar observation across Karachi of Pakistan. The GHI data is taken from the World Bank site and exploring on excel to find the future power generation across coastal megacity of Pakistan. Both wind speed and GHI parameter are observed by a yearly basis. It is detected that the regular trend for each of the selected years is related to the next year so the perceived trend of GHI and wind speed is valid for the upcoming year. Hence the GHI and wind speed availability indicate the installation of solar penal and wind turbine for the power generation across the coastal megacity of Pakistan. The GHI and wind speed experimental data for the coastal megacity contain a huge amount of solar and wind potential. The planner needs to explore this energy by installing a suitable quantity of the solar plant and windmills for power generation.
