ObjectivesThe objective of this study is to assess the social support received by patients diagnosed with multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) in Zhejiang Province, People’s Republic of China and the factors that may have influenced it.MethodsA total of 220 MDR-TB patients participated in the questionnaire-based survey, and the data from 212 valid questionnaires were analyzed. The respondents reported their sociodemographic status, disease features, and attitudes toward the disease. The social support rating scale was used to measure the patients’ social support scores. An Independent Samples t-test, one-way analysis of variance, and a multiple linear regression model were used to analyze the related factors for the social support scores.ResultThe average social support score of each MDR-TB patient was 32.56±7.86. Participants who were single, widowed or divorced, retired, and had fewer family members and lower family income were found to have lower social support scores. Participants unwilling to disclose their disease tended to have less social support (31.59<34.23, P=0.010). Participants who perceived great help from health care workers reported higher social support rating scale scores than those who perceived no help (35.36.29.89, P=0.014).ConclusionMDR-TB patients in Zhejiang Province were shown to have a low level of social support. Patients who were not married, had smaller families, and lower family income received less social support, suggesting that family harmony could be an important source of social support. Patients’ self-isolation may contribute to a decrease in the amount of support they receive from their surroundings. Health care organizations need to offer more social support to MDR-TB patients.

The microbes play an important role to physiological activities of human. Osteoporosis is one of the most closely relationship diseases with the elderly. In recent years, the studies found that gut microbiota can cause osteoporosis. These microbes may affect activity of osteoclasts and osteoblasts to affect bone metabolism. We selected 5 health people and 10 osteoporosis patients and found that the diversity of gut microbiota in osteoporosis patients are decreased and imbalance with lower abundance of lactobacillus and butylic acid bacteria, meanwhile, 25-hydroxyitamin D and procollagen type I N-terminal peptide (PINP) of osteoporosis patient was significantly lower than the normal group. The proliferation, differentiation and maturity of osteoblasts MC3T3-E1 cells was stimulated, the activity of alkaline phosphatase, concentration of osteocalcin and the expression of RUNX2, WNT2 and CTNNB1 was improved by supernatant of lactobacillus acidophilus and butanoic acids, however, the proliferation, differentiation and maturity, the expression of RANK,WNT2 and CTNNB1 in osteoclasts RAW 264.7 cells was suppressed. There is not a similar significant effect by lactobacillus rhamnosus treatment.

China faces an aging tsunami. By the end of 2016, the number of older adults aged 60 and older reached 230 million. This number is projected to reach 418 million by 2035 and peak at 487 million by 2053. The number of individuals aged 80 and older, the oldest adults, reached 26 million and continues to grow by 1 million a year. The socioeconomic context, characterized by an inverted pyramid family structure and the number of "empty nesters," has greatly compromised traditional Chinese family support for older adults. This article aims to provide an overview of geriatrics development in China. It begins with a brief account of the dramatic demographic shift, major socioeconomic factors, China's healthcare system, and reform related to senior health with a historical perspective. It then describes recent advances in government policy and support and development of a geriatrics physician workforce, care models, primary care networks, and privately owned senior care facilities and support services. Although it is impossible to cover all aspects of the topic, it is hoped that this article provides readers an overall picture of Chinese geriatrics and senior healthcare development in a complex and evolving healthcare system. Geriatrics communities in the United States and around the world will undoubtedly learn and benefit from the unparalleled and continued efforts to address this unprecedented opportunity and challenge in China.
