Curling's ulcer: A rare condition

Abstract: A case of Curling's ulceration of the duodenum in a child with 50 per cent burns, requiring operative arrest of the bleeding, is reported, and this condition is reviewed. Inquiry among the surgical units treating burns in Great Britian showed that only 18 cases of alimentary bleeding had been seen in the course of treating some 32 500 patients. The incidence in Europe and Australia appears to be of the same order, but there is a much higher incidence in some burns units in North America. Possible reasons for t… Show more

“…Muir and Jones (1976) reported low incidence of duodenal ulcer in burn patients in USA, compared with those in UK, and this was explained by use of crystalloids in USA, and colloids in UK. 19 Currently, burn therapists feel that early colloid infusion, is not suitable early in massive burn cases as a resuscitative fluid, and is accompanied with many hazards. These hazards are represented by renal, pulmonary, and metabolic disturbances.…”

A rare cause of duodenal ulcer complicated by haemorrhage is discussed by Muir & Jones (1976). This is the Curling's ulceration of the duodenum, which may complicate severe burns.…”
