Cure Kinetics and Properties of High Performance Cycloaliphatic Epoxy Resins Cured with Anhydride

Abstract: In this work, a cycloaliphatic epoxy resin hexahydrophthalic acid bis(3,4-epoxycyclohexylmethyl) ester (BE) was prepared and cured with anhydride. The curing kinetics and properties of the cycloaliphatic epoxy resin were characterized and compared with (3′,4′-epoxycyclohexane) methyl-3,4-epoxycyclohexyl-carboxylate (CE) and bis(3,4-epoxycyclohexylmethyl) adipate (BA). The result shows that BE/4-methyl hexahydrophthalic anhydride (MHHPA) exhibits a higher reaction activation energy and a slower curing rate th… Show more

“…Prepolymers based on cycloaliphatic epoxy monomers present several advantages compared to diglycidyl ether derivative monomers, namely low viscosity, high electrical resistivity, and UV resistance [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 ]. Considering these outstanding features, numerous works have investigated cycloaliphatic epoxy precursors for different applications including the coating of electronic components, electrical insulation, and the development of optical devices [ 7 , 8 , 9 , 10 , 11 ].…”

“…It was relatively easy for parts of the molecular chains to move and free volume to expand. 43 However, although the tetramethyl-substituted biphenyl structure with high free volume was introduced into the TMPK/DCPD system, the thermosets still showed lower CTE, which seemed to be contrary to our common belief that the larger free volume, the higher CTE. As the matter of fact, this observation was quite similar to the schematic investigations on the structure-CTE relations.…”
