Curcuminoid’s Content and Fingerprint Analysis for Authentication and Discrimination of Curcuma xanthorrhiza from Curcuma longa by High-Performance Liquid Chromatography-Diode Array Detector

Abstract: An accurate and reliable method for authentication and discrimination of Curcuma xanthorrhiza (CX) from Curcuma longa (CL) by determining the curcuminoid's content and analyzing the HPLC fingerprint combined with discriminant analysis (DA) was developed. By using the proposed method, it was found that CL had higher amount of all curcuminoid compounds compared to CX. Therefore, these two closely related species could be authenticated and discriminated by the amount of curcuminoids present in the samples. Authen… Show more

“…Because the adulteration practice of herbal plant used as raw material has became a serious problem, the authentication of C. xanthorrhiza needs to be performed in order to ensure its quality, safety, and efficacy [10,11]. The adulteration practice, either intentionally or unintentionally, usually includes partial or full substitution of original crude drugs with other substances which is cheaper, either free from or inferior in therapeutic properties.…”

“…Therefore, the presence of other Curcuma species, such as C. zedoaria and C. xanthorhhiza, has been detected in turmeric powder sold in India [9]. Some analytical methods have been developed for authenticating medicinal plants, including fingerprint analysis using High-Performance Liquid Chromatography-Diode Array Detector (HPLC-DAD) combined with chemometrics [7], metabolomics technique using Proton Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (H-NMR) combined with multivariate analysis [10], and DNA based approach using DNA Barcoding [9], Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD) [11], and Sequence Characterized Amplified Region (SCAR) [12]. The main disadvantage of these methods is that several steps are needed for sample preparation, making the process slow and costly.…”
