Curcuminoid-loaded poly(methyl methacrylate) nanoparticles for cancer therapy

Abstract: Curcuminoids (Curs), oleoresins from Curcuma longa L., have known anticarcinogenic and anti-inflammatory properties, but high toxicity, poor aqueous solubility and susceptibility to degradation in body fluids are deterrents to their clinical administration. Poly(methyl methacrylate) nanoparticles (PMMA-NPs) are biocompatible and resilient and can entrap hydrophobic drugs. The present investigation is related to solubilizing Curs by incorporating them in these nanoparticles (NPs) and is related to a study compa… Show more

“…PMMA particles have been shown to inhibit metastatic cancer cells [22]. Moreover, curcuminoid-loaded PMMA particles have been reported to inhibit the cancer cell proliferation [23]. In another report, PMMA conjugated with arginine, glycine, aspartic acid (RGD) peptide sequence showed strong anti-cancer activities [21].…”

“…PMMA is basically biocompatible polyester with high resistance to chemical hydrolysis, and high drug permeability and most important is that it does not cause toxicity [19]. Recently, a few studies have been demonstrated that different forms and structures of PMMA possess anti-cancer properties [20][21][22][23][24]. There is no report on the effect of PMMA (400-500 mm) on cancer cell viability and so considering various beneficial attributes of PMMA, we have decided to study the effect of PMMA on cancer cells.…”

“…The pores between the beads are the carriers and space for drug release. The PMMA bone cement absorbs water through these pores and releases the water-soluble drugs by dispersion [10,11] . ES is a mucopolysaccharide substance with a relative molecular mass (Mr) of 3500-5500 with good water solubility.…”

“…The therapeutic use of natural compounds requires an efficient extraction process that is able to provide enough phytoactive compounds that are necessary to overcome the biological barriers and induce the desired pharmacological response [18,19]. Nano-delivery systems have shown interesting and promising properties for enhancing the activity of natural compounds [18,19]. These small particles could have the ability to overcome the blood-brain barrier and enhance drug targeting to the central nervous system (CNS) [20,21].…”
