Curcumin-carrying nanoparticles prevent ischemia-reperfusion injury in human renal cells

Abstract: Renal ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI) is a major complication in clinical practice. However, despite its frequency, effective preventive/treatment strategies for this condition are scarce. Curcumin possesses antioxidant properties and is a promising potential protective agent against renal IRI, but its poor water solubility restricts its application. In this study, we constructed curcumin-carrying distearoylphosphatidylethanolamine-polyethylene glycol nanoparticles (Cur-NPs), and their effect on HK-2 cells e… Show more

“…The decrease in MDA values after the administration of liposomal curcumin was shown by other researchers in oxidative stress conditions induced by experimental renal ischemia. 56 The ability to reduce the NO formation has also been demonstrated in previous studies. 57,58 It has been shown that in brain tissue, the inhibition of inducible nitric oxide synthase can be closely correlated with increasing concentrations of the administered curcuminoids.…”

“…Xu et al used curcumin, which has antioxidant properties and is a promising protective agent against renal I/R injury. 56 During myocardial I/R, a large amount of ROS is produced. Lee et al generated H 2 O 2 -responsive polymer NPs and examined their therapeutic effect on myocardial I/R injury by targeting them to the site of ROS overproduction to treat oxidative stress-associated diseases.…”

“…Every year, multiple new agents are reported to elicit some nephroprotection in pre-clinical models (e.g. [40][41][42][43][44][45][46][47]), but the proof of their efficacy in human trials is still lacking, and, hence, the unmet need remains.…”
