Curcumin and resveratrol in combination modulate drug-metabolizing enzymes as well as antioxidant indices during lung carcinogenesis in mice

Abstract: This study investigated combined chemopreventive potential of curcumin and resveratrol during benzo(a)pyrene (BP)-induced lung carcinogenesis in mice. The mice were segregated into five groups that included normal control, BP-treated, BP + curcumin-treated, BP + resveratrol-treated, and BP + curcumin + resveratrol-treated groups. A statistically significant increase in the levels of lipid peroxidation (LPO) was observed in the lungs of mice after 22 weeks of single dose of benzo(a)pyrene. Further, BP … Show more

“…B(a)P induces oxidative stress, which plays an important role in inducing lung toxicity and lung cancer . LPO is a well‐known oxidative stress marker and several studies showed that significant increase in the formation of malondialdehyde (MDA), a lipid peroxidation product was observed after B(a)P treatment . It has previously shown that MDA acts as a mutagen and tumor promoter .…”

“…Though there are enough evidences chronicled in literature on the in vitro efficacy of curcumin in killing lung cancer cells, it has only been recently that the detailed molecular evidence‐based information regarding the in vivo efficacy of dietary curcumin in preventing lung cancer incidence and progression is reporting . This study also is an attempt to contribute to this knowledge pool.…”

“…In contrast to other malignant tumours, especially those of the gastrointestinal tract, the association between diet and the risk of lung cancer is not strong. A slight but statistically significant protective effect of consuming fruit and vegetables has been described, probably owing to their antioxidant and cell growth inhibitory activities 77 . Environmentally, a reduced level of exposure to particulate matter air pollution could contribute to a reduction in the incidence of lung cancer.…”
