Cupric oxide (CuO) is considered as a promising photocathode material for photo(electro)chemical water splitting because of its suitable band gap, low cost related to copper earth abundancy, and straightforward fabrication. The main challenge for the development of practical CuO-based photocathodes for solar hydrogen evolution is to enhance its stability against photocorrosion. In this work, stable and efficient CuO photocathodes have been developed by using a simple and cost-effective methodology. CuO films, composed of nanowires and prepared by chemical oxidation of electrodeposited Cu, develop relatively high photocurrents in 1 M NaOH. However, this photocurrent appears to be partly associated with photocorrosion of CuO. It is significant though that, even unprotected, a faradaic efficiency for hydrogen evolution of ∼45% is attained. The incorporation of iron through an impregnation method, followed by a high-temperature thermal treatment for promoting the external phase transition of the nanowires from CuO to ternary copper iron oxide, was found to provide an improved stability at the expense of photocurrent, which decreases to about one-third of its initial value. In contrast, a faradaic efficiency for hydrogen evolution of ∼100% is achieved even in the absence of co-catalysts, which is ascribable to the favorable band positions of CuO and the iron copper ternary oxide in the core-shell structure of the nanowires.

Solar water splitting, which has been a topic of intensive research interest for several decades, is one of the promising approaches to utilize renewable energy to maintain the sustainable prosperity of our society. However, up to now no mature photoelectrochemical cell can be used in practical large-scale applications because of the difficulties to satisfy all the harsh requirements, including high energy conversion efficiency, high stability and low cost. This feature article reviews the recent progress in developing photocathodes in photoelectrochemical cell for solar hydrogen production. Both the developments of the p-type semiconductor light absorbers and the efforts to develop synergistic approaches to improve the overall performance of the photocathode are discussed.

Abtract: Cuprous oxide(Cu 2 O) were synthesized by a wet-chemical approach in aqueous solution and Pd electrocatalysts supported on cuporus oxide (Pd/ Cu 2 O) and Vulcan XC-72 (Pd/C) were synthesized both via modified sodium borohydride reduction method. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and cyclic voltammetry(CV) methods were used to characterize the surface morphology and composition of Cu 2 O nanoparticles and the catalysts. 10 Linear sweep voltammetry (LSV) and Chronoamperometry (CA) were employed to evaluate the activity and stability of the catalysts. The results showed that Cu 2 O nanoparticles were spherical with smooth surface and the average diameter was about 600 nm. Pd nanoparticles decorated on the surface of Cu 2 O nanospheres and agglomerated slightly and the average size of the Pd nanoparticles was about 10 nm. A certain amount of Copper oxide and the metallic Cu were formed during the preparation of the Pd/Cu 2 O 15 catalyst. The Pd catalyst supported on cuporus oxide (Pd/Cu 2 O) shows the superior performance to the catalyst supported on Vulcan XC-72, which attributed to the two reasons. One was the Pd/Cu 2 O catalyst had the larger surface area and the other was all of the support Cu 2 O itself, Copper oxide and the metallic Cu formed in the process of catalyst preparation have activity to the H 2 O 2 electroreduction reaction to a certain extent.20
