Cumulative risk of breast cancer screening outcomes according to the presence of previous benign breast disease and family history of breast cancer: supporting personalised screening

Abstract: Background:Our aim was to assess the cumulative risk of false-positive screening results, screen-detected cancer, and interval breast cancer in mammography screening among women with and without a previous benign breast disease and a family history of breast cancer. Methods:The cohort included 42 928 women first screened at the age of 50–51 years at three areas of the Spanish Screening Programme (Girona, and two areas in Barcelona) between 1996 and 2011, and followed up until December 2012. We used discrete-tim… Show more

“…It is not currently known whether women with BBD are followed and screened more closely compared to women without BBD diagnoses. Current data from a study of over 42,000 screened women in Spain found that women with a previous benign breast disease diagnosis had a higher cumulative risk of screen-detected cancer and interval cancers, consistent with data supporting BBD as a risk factor for breast cancer regardless of the mode of detection [46]. Whether women with BBD in our cohort are more likely than the general population to participate in screening is not known but could be the subject of future research.…”

“…Cancer is a multifactorial disease, and benign breast diseases are one of the most important risk factors for breast cancer 5,49,96. The results of a cohort study indicated that benign breast diseases are associated with an increased risk of ER-positive and ER-negative invasive breast cancer, and the rate of this increase is different in different age 94.…”
