“…The subsequent keratinization of the fetal skin, including follicular and interfollicular keratinization, occurs around 22-25 weeks of gestation [49], which would explain why fewer K8 cells are present in the later gestational periods. Although the cells found within the AF have been categorized into three main types: epithelial (E-type), fibroblast-like (F-Type) and amniotic fluids (AFType) cells [51,52], previous studies have demonstrated that keratin staining is restricted to mainly epithelioid (Type-E) and some amniotic fluid (Type-AF) type cells; fibroblast-like (Type-F) cells have been shown to be negative for keratin, suggesting a more mesenchymal origin [55]. Our results certainly support these findings.…”

“…Epithelia, such as amniotic membranes, fetal epidermis, and the mucosa of the digestive, respiratory or urogenital tract are potential sources of these cells. They thus provide morphologically and biochemically distinct fetal cells that are isogenic (8). Upon culture some of these cells acquire a morphology resembling that of skin fibroblasts (9).…”

“…Therefore, we analyzed collagen XVII expression in amniotic fluid cells, which were cultured for prenatal diagnosis. Previous studies suggested that these cells originated either from urinary bladder or fetal membranes and were mostly epithelial (Virtanen et al, 1981). The presence of collagen XVII mRNA in these cells was confirmed by using RT-PCR amplification and sequencing of the products (Fig.…”
