Cultural Management of Huanglongbing: Current Status and Ongoing Research

Abstract: Huanglongbing (HLB), formerly known as greening, is a bacterial disease restricted to some Asian and African regions until two decades ago. Nowadays, causing bacteria and their vectors have spread to almost all citrus producing regions, and it is currently considered the most devastating citrus disease. HLB management can be approached in terms of prevention, limiting or avoiding pathogen and associated vectors to reach an area, or in terms of control, trying to reduce the impact of the disease by adopting dif… Show more

“…Although in some regions the incidence has not exceeded 2%, in others, the proportion of HLB affected trees has reached 60%. Because there is no curative measures of control or resistant cultivars, 21,43 currently the recommendation to reduce the progress of HLB and to avoid further damage due to the disease is to plant healthy nursery trees, scout and eliminate the inoculum sources inside and in the perimeter of the farm, and control the vector on a regional scale in order to prevent its introduction and reproduction in the orchards 21,44 . In addition, the establishment of new orchards in areas with low incidence of HLB or where the regional management of the disease is taken seriously is becoming a critical strategy for the success of the citrus industry 21 …”

“…A comprehensive review on cultural methods and other management strategies against Diaphorina citri and HLB has been published recently 34 . However, information on the efficacy of kaolin particle film technology as a way to interfere with the host plant‐finding ability, settling behavior,‐ and probing of T. erytreae on citrus plants is lacking.…”

“…HLB remains the No. 1 challenge for citrus growers despite some progress in HLB management including three-pronged management ( Yuan et al, 2021 ; Alquézar et al, 2022 ), plant defense inducers ( Li et al, 2019 ), antimicrobials ( Akula et al, 2011 ; Li et al, 2019 , 2021 ), heat treatment Thapa et al, 2021 ), microbiome manipulation ( Riera et al, 2017 ), growth hormones ( Canales et al, 2016 ; Tang and Vashisth, 2020 ), and enhanced nutrition programs ( Stansly et al, 2014 ). Owing to the inability to culture the HLB pathogens in vitro , the pathogenicity mechanism of HLB remains poorly understood ( da Graça et al, 2022 ; Pandey et al, 2022 ).…”
