Cultivation of Guaco (Mikania laevigata Sch. Bip. ex Baker) in the Lower Amazon River and monitoring of coumarin, its principal active constituent

Abstract: ResumoMikania laevigata (Asteraceae) é popularmente usada no tratamento de doenças respiratórias, incluindo asma, bronquite e tosse. No cultivo do guaco, as variáveis climáticas… Show more

“…de Castro et al (2003) also claimed the variation of the biomass production of Mikania glomera in different photoperiods. Raposo et al (2017) corroborated these observations, as studying the influence of solar radiation on the production of Mikania laevigata in the Lower Amazon River under shade.…”

“…In this species, simple coumarin (1,2-benzopyrone) is considered the main chemical marker (ANVISA, 2011) and occurs in higher concentrations in the upper region of young leaves. Its presence in the plant results in a pleasant aroma reminiscent of vanilla (RAPOSO et al, 2017), and it is traditionally used to treat bronchitis, asthma and coughs (BIAVATTI et al, 2014). Regarding its allelopathic activity, 1,2-benzopyrone can promote or inhibit the growth of plants, since it interferes with cell division, elongation and differentiation, especially in roots.…”
