Organic mulches as a soil cover effectively improved soil quality and crop yield. Likewise, application of right nitrogen (N) source also plays an imperative role to increase the crop production and decrease N losses. Therefore, this investigation was aimed at to determine the effect of various N sources and organic mulches on productivity of wheat grown in semi-arid area. The experiment was comprised of different organic mulches, i.e. M 1 = no mulch (control), M 2 = maize straw mulch (5 t ha -1 ), M 3 = wheat straw mulch (5 t ha -1 ), M 4 = sorghum straw mulch (5 t ha -1 ) and nitrogen sources i.e., NS 1 = urea, NS 2 = ammonium sulfate (AS) and NS 3 = calcium ammonium nitrate (CAN). The application of sorghum straw mulch significantly reduced weed biomass compared to other mulch. Moreover, sorghum straw mulch also resulted in maximum leaf area index (LAI), crop growth rate (CGR), productive tillers (323.11), spikelet/ spike (15.88), grains/spike (44.55), 1000-grain weight (42.13g), grain yield (5.13 t ha -1 ) and biological yield (14.59 t ha -1 ) and minimum, LAI, CGR and tillers (291.55), spikelet/spike (12.55), grains/spike (36.11), 1000-grain weight (35.91g), grain yield (3.67 t ha -1 ) and biological yield (11.80 t ha -1 ) was noticed in control (no mulch) . In case of nitrogen sources maximum LAI, CGR and productive tillers (316.91), spikelet/spike (14.91), grains/spike (42.25), 1000-grain weight (41.15g), grain yield (4.60 t ha -1 ) and biological yield (13.72 t ha -1 ) was recorded with application of CAN and minimum LAI, CGR and tillers (306.00), spikelet/spike (13.83), grains/spike (38.83), 1000-grain weight (36.83g), grain yield (4.28 t ha -1 ) and biological yield (12.59 t ha -1 ) was recorded in urea. Therefore, these results suggested that sorghum straw mulch and N in the form of calcium ammonium nitrate can effectively improve the wheat production in semi-arid areas.

Due to global climate change, sugar sorghum (Sorghum saccharatum), due to its fast growth rate, early maturation, efcient use of water and limited need for fertilizers, is the most promising plant for biofuel production in the world. The article presents the results of the study on establishing the dependence of sugar sorghum energy performance indicators on varietal characteristics (varieties 'Silosne 42' and 'Favorit' and hybrids 'Dovista' and 'Medoviy F1') and the green biomass harvesting time. The purpose of the research was to establish the inﬂuence of varietal characteristics and harvesting time on sugar sorghum energy productivity in the zone of unstable moisture in the Central part of the Forest-Steppe of Ukraine. The research subject is sugar sorghum energy productivity indicators (yield of green biomass; sugar content of juice; yield of biogas, bioethanol, solid biofuel; total energy yield). The studies were carried out during 2016–2020 in the zone of unstable moisture in the central part of the Forest-Steppe of Ukraine in the conditions of the Bila Tserkva Experimental Breeding Station of the Institute of Bioenergy Crops and Sugar Beet of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. It has been established that the highest yield of biofuel and energy (up to 791.8 GJ/ha) is achieved under growing sugar sorghum of the 'Dovista' hybrid, provided that its biomass is collected in the phase of full seed ripeness (early October). It is advisable to start collecting sugar sorghum biomass for biogas after the panicle throwing phase. To ensure the maximum yield of bioethanol, the optimal time for harvesting green biomass of sugar sorghum is the second decade of September – the frst decade of October. The maximum yield of solid biofuel is achieved under harvesting biomass after the phase of waxy ripeness of grain. The formation of the yield of green biomass of sugar sorghum was more inﬂuenced by weather conditions (47.4 %), the inﬂuence of varietal characteristics (17.8 %) and the timing of harvesting (12.8 %) was less. But the energy yield was most inﬂuenced by the timing of harvesting biomass (37.4 %). A close linear correlation between the energy output and the yield of green (R2=0.81) and dry biomass (R2=0.99) was established. The most ecological plasticity in terms of the total energy yield per unit area turned out to be the 'Medoviy F1' hybrid (b=1.62), which indicates the prospects of growing this hybrid under favorable weather conditions and high level of agricultural technology. O sorgo sacarino (Sorghum bicolor L. Moench) vem se destacando na agroindústria como fonte promissora para produção de etanol devido ao seu alto teor de açúcar. Com isso, surge a necessidade de realizar mais estudos para avaliar as melhores formas de manejo da cultura. Objetivou-se avaliar as formas de manejo quanto ao parcelamento de adubação, época de corte para colheita e irrigação do sorgo sacarino, a fim de se buscar um arranjo que promova maior produtividade. O experimento foi conduzido a campo com delineamento em blocos casualizados, em esquema de parcelas sub-subdivididas, com três repetições. Utilizou-se duas épocas de corte, de 90 e 120 dias após a semeadura (DAS), dois manejos de irrigação, 90 e 45 minutos diários, iniciados a partir da floração e adubação nitrogenada de cobertura com uma, duas e três adubações. Foram avaliados altura das plantas, diâmetro do colmo, massa verde de colmo e massa verde total, teor de sólidos solúveis, volume de caldo, volume sólidos solúveis, massa seca de colmo e massa seca total. A permanência das plantas em campo por mais 30 dias resulta em aumento da altura, massa verde de colmo e teor de sólidos solúveis. O tempo de irrigação de 45 minutos diários é suficiente para suprir a necessidade da cultura do sorgo em cultivos com condições similares a deste trabalho. O parcelamento da adubação de cobertura em três vezes não resulta em aumento significativo que justifique a adesão dessa prática, sendo recomendado o parcelamento em duas vezes com resultados similares ao parcelamento em três vezes, porém com menor custo de mão de obra no final do ciclo
