Cucumber Necrosis Virus Is a Member of the Tombusvirus Group

Abstract: SUMMARYThe electrophoretic patterns of dsRNA species isolated from cucumber plants infected with cucumber necrosis virus (CNV) and from Nicotiana clevelandii plants infected with tomato bushy stunt virus (TBSV) were almost identical and differed greatly from the electrophoretic patterns of dsRNA species isolated from tobacco plants infected with tobacco necrosis virus (TNV). Hybridization with cloned cDNA of CNV showed that there was extensive homology between the nucleic acids of CNV and TBSV but not between … Show more

“…Cucumber necrosis virus (CNV), a member of the tombusvirus group (Rochon & Tremaine, 1988), is an isometric plant virus with a 30 nm particle composed of 180 copies of a single capsid protein with an approximate Mr of 41K (Tremaine, 1972). The CNV genome is monopartite and consists of single-stranded, positivesense RNA of approximately 4.7 kb (Tremaine, 1972;.…”

“…Cucumber necrosis virus (CNV) is a member of the Tombusvirus genus in the family Tombusviridae (27)(28)(29). As such, the genome is positive-sense, single-stranded RNA encapsidated by a Tϭ3 icosahedral shell.…”

“…Cucumber necrosis tombusvirus (CNV) (Rochon & Tremaine, 1988) is an icosahedral virus with a monopartite genome of positive-sense ssRNA approximately 4.7 kb in length (Rochon & Tremaine, 1989). The only known natural systemic host for CNV is the cucumber; however, the experimental host range of CNV is wide and diversified (McKeen, 1959).…”
