CuCl Nanoplatelets from an Ionic Liquid‐Crystal Precursor

Abstract: Research on ionic liquids (ILs) has focused on the synthesis of and organic chemistry in ILs. Recently, however, ILs have also received attention from the inorganic materials community. Ionic liquids can act as solvents for reactants and morphology templates for the products at the same time, which enables the synthesis of inorganic materials with novel or improved properties. In principle, the IL can be retrieved after synthesis and thus provides an ecologically friendly and economical approach to inorganic m… Show more

“…The exothermic peak observed here, however, is similar to DSC traces of mixtures of dodecylpyridinium tetrachlorocuprate and 6-O-palmitoyl ascorbic acid, where the exothermic peak is due to the reduction of Cu(II) to Cu(I) and the formation of CuCl crystals. 12,13 Here, the exothermic DSC peak is due to the thermal reduction of Au(III) to Au(0).…”

“…As these ILCs serve as precursors for inorganic matter, we have termed them ionic liquid crystal precursors, ILCPs. 12,13 Unlike conventional precursor/solvent/ reactant mixtures, ILCPs are "all-in-one" reactant-solventtemplates. 3,12,13 Other research groups have recently adapted this concept and presented their own ILCPs.…”

“…The ionic conductivities and LC structures of the obtained 1-methylimidazolium ILs could be conveniently adjusted by anions, which would potentially be used as an on-off switch of ions ( Figure 17) (Yazaki et al, 2008b). Besides imidazolium ionic LCs, other thermotropic ionic LCs based on pyridinium (Bowlas et al, 1996;Cruz et al, 2000;Cui et al, 2002;Gordon et al, 1998;Neve et al, 2000;Neve et al, 2001;Taubert, 2004), quaternary ammonium (Alami et al, 1993;Arkas et al, 1999;Lu et al, 1997;Pott & Meleard, 2009;Tittarelli et al, 1997), quaternary phosphonium (Abdallah et al, 2000;Chen et al, 2002;Gowda et al, 2004), pyrrolidinium (Goossens et al, 2009), dithiolium (Artzner et al, 1997) and guanidinium ILs (Kim et al, 2005;Mathevet et al, 2005;Sauer et al, 2008) have also been explored. Two important phenomena should be especially noticed.…”

“…Among others, inorganic nano-and microparticles such as CuCl [6], Ag [7], or Au [7] have been made by using ILs as precursors, where the IL provides at least one component of the final material. Accordingly, these ILs have been termed ionic liquid precursors (ILPs) [8] and an analogous synthesis strategy has also been developed for (doped) carbon materials [9] [10] [11], Ni and NiO nanomaterials [12], CuS [13], Fe 3 C [14], In 2 O 3 [15], ZnO [16], CuO [17]. Other studies have focused on the synthesis using fluorine-containing anions as fluoride precursors [18] [19] [20].…”
