Crystallization behavior, mechanical properties, and environmental biodegradability of poly(β‐hydroxybutyrate)/cellulose acetate butyrate blends

Abstract: ABSTRACT:The miscibility, crystallization behavior, tensile properties, and environmental biodegradability of poly(␤-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB)/cellulose acetate butyrate (CAB) blends were studied with differential scanning calorimetry, scanning electron microscopy, wide-angle X-ray diffraction, and polarizing optical microscopy. The results indicated that PHB and CAB were miscible in the melt state. With an increase in the CAB content, the degree of crystallinity and melting temperature of the PHB phase decreased… Show more

“…12 In fact, this system is miscible over the entire composition range, for no evidence was found for a second lower temperature, T g , as the blends contain more than 60% of PHB. The trend in T g is ascribed to the presence of two mobilization processes in a homogeneous blend.…”

“…12 Our purpose is to find the relationship between the blend morphology and physical properties, but more important is to seek a means of making the best use of this degradable polyester. Unfortunately, we found that the mechanical properties of PHB/CAB blends were not greatly improved to meet the needs of practical use.…”

“…PHAs blends with cellulose acetate butyrate, wollastonite, or poly(L-lactide) have been studied, with the aim to enhance hydrolytic or enzymatic biodegradation. [24][25][26] Biodegradability of surface-modified PHAs membranes or films has been attracting much attention in recent years. For example, PHB films with a functionalized surface have been prepared by alkali treatment so as to enhance hydrophilicity and biodegradability in soil.…”
