Crystal-Storing Histiocytosis Complicating Primary Pulmonary Marginal Zone Lymphoma of Mucosa-Associated Lymphoid Tissue

Abstract: Crystal-storing histiocytosis is an uncommon form of nonneoplastic histiocytic proliferation that in most patients complicates an underlying lymphoproliferative or plasma cell disorder. Lung is a common site of involvement in patients with localized disease. We present an illustrative example from a 54-year-old woman with an asymptomatic solitary lung nodule. The tumor was characterized by sheets of histiocytes with abundant cytoplasm expanded by distinctive eosinophilic inclusions. Focal necrosis was present.… Show more

“…4 , 5 RA is commonly accompanied by B-lymphocyte dysfunction, which is mainly manifested as evident increase and high activation of CD19 + CD25 + lymphocytes that reflect the disease progress. 6 It is well known that trace elements are closely associated with many aspects of human life such as tissue construction and repair, immune function enhancement, and even prevention and treatment of RA. As en essential trace element, copper is a crucial component of human proteins and enzymes.…”

“…Crystal-storing histiocytosis (CSH), an extremely rare condition in which crystalline material accumulates in the cytoplasm of histiocytes, is typically associated with an underlying lymphoproliferative or plasma cell disorder, such as multiple myeloma, lymphoplasmacytic lymphoma, and MGUS. [1][2][3] Other possible diseases associated with CSH include rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn's disease, and administration of clofazimine, an antibiotic traditionally used to treat leprosy. 4 The mechanism of crystal formation is unknown.…”

“…5 Most frequently involved sites in generalized CSH are liver, lymph nodes, spleen, and kidney, while head and neck, lung, and pleura in localized CSH. [1][2][3][4][5] Most patients present with an asymptomatic mass or swelling. [1][2][3][4][5] Treatment and prognosis varied according to the underlying disease.…”

“…[2345] Generalized CSH is usually associated with poor prognosis, regardless of the type of underlying lymphoproliferative process, however, in localized CSH the prognosis is variable depending upon the extent of tissue involved and the underlying condition of the patient. In general, the prognosis and overall survival in patients with localized CSH associated with marginal zone lymphoma is comparable to age and sex matched normal patient control, as described in a recent review by Zhang and Myers.…”

“…In general, the prognosis and overall survival in patients with localized CSH associated with marginal zone lymphoma is comparable to age and sex matched normal patient control, as described in a recent review by Zhang and Myers. [4] We herewith, describe a rare presentation of a lymphoproliferative process due to the presence of background CSH initially diagnosed on a FNA. A similar report of mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma involving the parotid gland has been described in an 81-year-old female on FNA, demonstrating immunoglobulin crystals within histiocytes admixed with monocytoid B-cells and plasma cells.…”
