Cryptic Torrent Frogs of Myanmar: An Examination of the Amolops marmoratus Species Complex with the Resurrection of Amolops afghanus and the Identification of a New Species

Abstract: We investigated diversity in the Amolops marmoratus species complex within Myanmar using both molecular and morphological characters from recently collected specimens. Based on congruence between multivariate analyses of quantitative morphological characters and phylogenetic analyses of nucleotide variation in the 16S ribosomal gene conducted on 43 out of 182 frogs examined, we recognize A. marmoratus for specimens from the states of Mon and Shan and northern Tanintharyi Division and designate a neotype for th… Show more

“…Many geographically widespread species of frogs in Southeast Asia have been shown to consist of complexes of cryptic species (Bain et al 2003;Stuart et al 2006;Inger et al 2009;Dever et al 2012), including Polypedates leucomystax (Matsui et al 1986;Narins et al 1998;Brown et al 2010;Kuraishi et al 2011;Kuraishi et al 2013). The common tree frog, Polypedates leucomystax, is an Asian rhacophorid frog, which is commonly found in nonforested and forested areas and has a wide geographic distribution throughout Southeast Asia, southern China and India (Liu 1950;Taylor 1962;Inger 1966;Dutta 1997;Brown et al 2010Ϳ.…”

“…Two sequences submitted to GenBank as A. indoburmanensis from Assam, India (KU589221) and Murlen, Mizoram, India (MN519705) also claded with the holotype of A. indoburmanensis with a genetic distance of 0.013 and 0.015 respectively ( Table 2). While reviewing the Amolops marmoratus species complex of Myanmar, Dever et al 32 described A. indoburmanensis from southern Myanmar; and is also expected to occur in northeast India. 32,33 Dinesh et al 34 included the species in their amphibian checklist of India, but did not mention any voucher sample or locality.…”
