Crowdsensing Solutions in Smart Cities towards a Networked Society

Abstract: The goal of the paper is to give an overview of the most relevant aspects of mobile crowdsensing that are already utilized by the society. The paper focuses on best practices applied in smart cities today, how these applications can be motivated (incentives), and how they rely on technology enablers of today's vertical silos and future's horizontal approaches. We introduce a path for transforming the vertical silos of today containing separated solutions in various domains into a horizontal, unified ecosystem,… Show more

“…This method is also an example of IoT, and it is widely known as community-or crowdsensing. This kind of crowd-based data collection and processing is widely used, and thought to be even more widespread in the coming years in Smart Cities [26]. The price of the mobile applications for these devices is cheap, and the great number of downloads ensure a steady profit for the companies operating in the field of communication and service computing.…”

“…The researchers support the statement with an indicative framework that calculates the amount of emphasis that one of the perspectives mentioned is applied upon a crowd-based IoT system. A generic approach on crowdsensing solutions is presented in [11] by examining state-of-the-art applications and architectures and the incentives utilized to successfully sustain crowd participation. Moreover, the researchers transform vertical architectures into horizontal ones towards the development of a unified framework and ecosystem that is adapted to specific business opportunities.…”

“…The phenomena where the sensors are attached to the human body and move with it across the day (smartphones primarily) is called crowdsensing and it is largely used in Smart City-related applications lately [30]. However, smartphones have a limited and changing variety of sensors from model to model, so they are often unsuitable for several kinds of sensing tasks [1].…”
