Crosslinking of cotton cellulose in the presence of alkyl diallyl ammonium salts. I. Physical properties and agent distribution

Abstract: ABSTRACT:We used three kinds of alkyl diallyl ammonium salts (methyl, ethyl, and propyl) in combination with dimethyloldihydroxyethyleneurea (DMDHEU) as crosslinking agents. The nitrogen content, dry crease recovery angle (DCRA), moisture regain, and wicking height for the DM-DHEU/alkyl diallyl ammonium salts were in the order of OCH 3 Ͼ OC 2 H 5 Ͼ OC 3 H 7 , but the wet crease recovery angle (WCRA) and tensile strength retention (TSR) were in the opposite order at the same resin concentration. For the same D… Show more

“…As well, water soluble forms of cellulose containing quaternary ammonium salt derivatives [15,16] have also been explored. Previous reports [12,17] indicate that the point of zero charge (PZC) of cellulose-based hydrogels range from 6 to 8; thus, affording suitable uptake properties of both anionic and cationic adsorbates according to the pH conditions.…”

“…Another case is polyamide-66, which was treated with a plasma polymerization process to improve the fire retardant property. 9 Methyl diallyl ammonium salt (MDAA) was synthesized according to the method described by Tö pfl 10 in our previous study, 11 in which MDAA was used to combine with dimethyloldihydroxyethyleneurea (DMDHEU) as crosslinking agent. The results revealed that the vinyl and epoxy groups could react with cellulose to change the crease recovery properties.…”

“…The absorption band of –NH2 in O‐MDAACS still existed but was shifted to 1647 cm −1 . Compared with chitosan, O‐MDAACS exhibited bands at 995 cm –1 for –CH=CH 2 and at 1487 cm –1 for the methyl group . In addition, a strong absorption band at 1096 cm −1 was observed, attributed to CH 2 ‐O‐CH 2 of O‐MDAACS.…”

“…Chitosan derivatives with a quaternary ammonium group are soluble in both acidic and basic physiological circumstances, so they might be good candidates as polycationic antimicrobial agents. In the literature, a quaternized chitosan, which is synthesized by the reaction of chitosan with glycidyl trimethylammonium chloride, has been reported to have good moisture retention capacity and antimicrobial activity …”
