Crossbreeding cattle in beef production programmes in Kenya. II. Comparison of purebred Boran and Boran crossed with the Red Poll and santa gertrudis breeds

Abstract: Two series of breed group comparisons for maternal traits were conducted at one location in Kenya. Data were collected on breed group series I for three years (Boran, 1/2 Red Poll-1/2 Boran (1/2 RP-1/2 B), 1/3 Red Poll-2/3 Boran (1/3 RP-2/3 B) and 2/3 Red Poll-1/3 Boran (2/3 RP-1/3 B) and on breed group series II for five years (Boran, 1/2 Santa Gertrudis-1/2 Boran (1/2 SG-1/2 B) and 1/2 Red Poll-1/2 Boran (1/2 RP-1/2 B]. The advantage in calf weight weaned per year per cow calving of 15.4% for the mean of thr… Show more

“…The significance of the fixed effects in the present study is in general agreement with the literature (Duarte-Ortuno et al 1988;Trail et al, 1984). Including weaning age of previous calf and adjusted weaning weight as a covariate for CI and AFC respectively, did not have any statistically significant effect.…”

“…The mean AFC and CI is higher than estimates for the same breed under ranch conditions in Kenya (Trail and Gregory, 1981;Trail, Gregory, Durkin and Sandford, 1984). However, the mean for CI after records longer than 2 years were deleted was similar to the mean of 421 days reported by Trail et al (1984).…”

“…We conducted a combination of systematic and meta-reviews as the methodology of qualitative comparative analysis (QCA). To do this, we used the actual published studies as our data (rather than the data used by each study), and this enabled us to pool non-standardized and qualitative information [8] for adaptation traits while for production and reproduction parameters [5] quantitative parameters were pooled to obtain estimated mean values. The implementation of the systematic and meta-reviews followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guideline [9] determination of quality of the information available in these articles (6) evaluation of the extent of heterogeneity of the articles [9,10]. The outcomes of interest were production, reproduction and adaptation characteristics of Boran cattle breed and the questions addressed were the following:…”
